Rachel Herdy

Associate Professor in the Department of Legal Theory at the National Faculty of Law (FND) and Permanent Professor in the Graduate Programme in Law (PPGD) at the Universidad Federal de Río de Janeiro (UFRJ). Between 2022 and 2025, she served as Associate Professor at Adolfo Ibáñez University. She holds an LL.B. and an LL.M. in Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). She has held research positions at the University of Miami School of Law and at the Argumentation Laboratory (ArgLab) of NOVA University Lisbon. Her research focuses on Legal Philosophy and Legal Theory, with particular emphasis on legal epistemology, the law of evidence, expert evidence, and judicial decision-making. She is co-leader of the Research Group on Epistemology Applied to Courts (GREAT), a member of the Instituto Questão de Ciência, and of international academic networks in legal epistemology. She is co-editor of the Evidence & Law collection published by Marcial Pons. She is the author of numerous publications in the field and coordinated the project When Justice Ignores Science, funded by the Serrapilheira Institute.
